Sea Calendar, by Penny Rumble

A Year in the Life of the Cornish Sea
An Exhibition of paintings and accompanying book launch at The Old Coastguard
In Spring 2015 the West Cornwall hotel, The Old Coastguard in Mousehole hosted Sea Calendar, its fourth art exhibition since coming under the rudder of EATDRINKSLEEP. The exhibition featured a collection of paintings by West Penwith artist, Penny Rumble, renowned for her take on the Cornish coast and sea.
Penny studied zoology at Cambridge, later becoming an antiques dealer and then taking up painting full time after moving to Cornwall in 2008. She exhibits from her studio in Sancreed, as well as at galleries in Penzance and St Ives.
‘The Sea Calendar’ is a continual project based on a study of the sea through the year, providing a visual record of the weather patterns over 12 months. The accompanying booklet, to be launched at the same time, has 12 colour illustrations and 4000 words across 30 pages and shows her notes throughout the project.
Penny Rumble said “I’m excited about this show. It’ll be great to see the work hanging together after a year perching on cliff tops and paddling in the waves recording the nature of the sea. While the exhibition is hung, I look forward to running a few workshops in the hotel’s garden. I’ll be demonstrating my painting techniques and hope for some audience participation in the creation of the next Mousehole seascape.”

Early Morning, Late Evening
by Chris Hankey
An Exhibition of paintings at The Cove Hotel, Lamorna
The Lamorna Cove Hotel in collaboration with Gillian Cooper of Art in Place, hosted an exhibition by the distinguished local artist Chris Hankey. This stunning collection of new paintings, the culmination of Chris’ recent explorations into the affects of the changing light at the very ends of the day on the Cornish landscape.
Chris Hankey was born in Lancashire in 1963 and achieved BA (Hons) Fine Art. He has lived in Penwith, Cornwall for over 10 years and has exhibited extensively in Australia, New York, Miami, San Francisco and Santa Fe, Nassau, Bahamas. Paris and Krakow, as well as throughout the UK and Cornwall. The Cornish landscape and sea, often windswept and stormy, allows Chris to explore his interest in man’s relationship with nature. The exhibition includes 16 medium and large oil paintings, often on panoramic landscape canvases, and also smaller works on paper using watercolour, acrylic and impasto.
The Lamorna Cove Hotel is a boutique hotel of apartments perched above the glorious, historic and world famous Lamorna Cove. Here everyone enjoys the comforts of a hotel with the convenience of their very own self catering apartment. The Hotel is located in the heart of Lamorna, home to well-known artists Alfred Munnings, Laura Knight and many Newlyn School painters of the turn of the century. From the poolside terrace it is a few minutes walk through the wooded valley to the cove, harbourside and coastal cliff paths, leading to Mousehole and the Minack Theatre at Porthcurno. Nearby St. Ives and Newlyn have long been an influence to those on the Cornish art scene.
